Obama’s FEMA will know what it’s doing

March 4th, 2009 @ 3:29 pm - by lotus · 5 Comments

We’re some kind of sorry to lose him, but y’all should be glad that Flordy’s emergency-management director, Craig Fugate, will be heading FEMA. Guy knows what he’s doing. From the St. Pete Times:

… Fugate, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, said he was cold-called a few weeks ago by people at the Department of Homeland Security and then met Wednesday with Secretary Janet Napolitano in Washington. He said he spoke with her for about 45 minutes, but no specific jobs were discussed beyond the mention of a “high-level position” in FEMA.

“I did not apply for a job. I did not post a resume’ for a job. I did not ask anyone to seek a job for me. I was contacted,” Fugate said. “I’ve been very clear I have a great boss and a great time and I’m not looking for a job. But I’ve also said: When the president asks you to serve the United States, serve your country, your first answer is not to say no.”

Don’t know if he is a Democrat or a Republican, but Fugate’s response is something Limbaugh and crew should pay attention to. I thought patriotism was a big deal to conservatives, it SHOULD be. Wishing for failure on the President’s part is just so wrong on so many levels.

I was impressed with that answer, too, lilaruby. Frankly, even if Bush’s people had called me, that would have been my response, even though my situation was similar to Fugate’s. Anyone in that position would have to judge whether he could do the job well enough given the circumstances, but you don’t just say no until you’ve thought all that through.

Right now, I don’t see that kind of spirit among many conservative “leaders” – the guys you see on TV and hear on radio. I think today’s conservatives are less well represented by their leaders than we progessives are. I’ve known quite a few ordinary conservatives in my life, and I think most would have answered as Fugate did.

Cujo359@2, yes, I too have conservative friends; several I know voted for Obama after McCain picked Palin, again putting country over ideology….not something you see these “leaders” doing. I have to believe this new batch of conservative “leaders” is doing them a huge disservice. I would imagine Eisenhower is turning in his grave.

Nearly a half century ago, John F. Kennedy said, “Follow me.” I fell in, deeming it my duty. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Duty is duty.

  5. Sorry fer yer loss darlin’ but I think some good things will result from this.
Now if we could just totally eliminate the Dept. of Homeland Security……..
