Odd champerty and maintenance footnote

February 13th, 2009 @ 12:28 pm - by NMC · 8 Comments

Patterson’s Presentence Report discloses that, at the time it was done, he was getting $80K a month from the tobacco cases. It’s gone down to $20K a month.

This is not the only way in which Patterson’s odd brushes with almost-practicing law came up.

Both figures are pretty obscene . . . and suggest much about the tobacco industry’s lengths to hide whatever’s in evidence against it.

They(Someone)(Scruggs)(Moore)who in the hell???Why??? Was Patterson getting a million dollars a year, obscene indeed. What did he ever do to be rewarded this way. This makes me think Moore is not as innocent as he would like us to think.

Last I looked champerty and maintenance was a crime in Mississippi. I’m still not sure how those folks who advertise they’ll bankroll lawsuits are getting around the statute.

That said, I don’t think that getting a payout violates the statute per se. Now funding or assisting a lawsuit in which you have no interest, that’s a different story.

Any idea about the basis upon which Patterson, of all people, was paid those payments? And who paid it?–tobacco companies, Scruggs, ….?

  5. billdees says:

lotus and BC: While the money undoubtedly came originally from the tobacco companies, it seems unlikely to me that it was allocated to Patterson by anyone other than Scruggs. A payment directly from the tobacco companies doesn’t make any sense to me.

    Me either, billdees.

  7. Madge says:

well he cant “share fees” becasue he is a non-lawyer- so it must come from the same plave as PL Blake’s alleged money and not directly from the lawsuit-

Madge, calling it by anything other than protection money, would kinda be like saying he really got a good deal because he was a handsome guy.
