A couple of updates (voter ID and the Delta Queen)

February 12th, 2009 @ 9:03 am - by NMC · 12 Comments

  • A voter ID bill with provisions for early voting and re-enfranchising nonviolent felons passed the Mississippi House. It does not require a state-issued photo id, and apparently has provisions the Governor won’t like.
  • The Sun-Herald runs an AP update on the Delta Queen: “Banished from America’s waterways as a cruise vessel, the 82-year-old sternwheel steamboat Delta Queen arrived Wednesday in Chattanooga to become a floating hotel and lounge on the Tennessee River. … The owners, Ambassadors International Inc., have chartered the mostly-wooden vessel to Chattanooga Water Taxi owner Harry Phillips while they attempt to find a buyer to again operate it for overnight cruises.” I wonder if this last sentence is right– are they trying to find a buyer now and have given up on the legislation they needed to keep running it?

I’m glad to see the MS House restore voting rights to non-violent felons. They deserve to vote once they have completed serving society’s punishment to them.

Now, if they only had somebody worth voting for. See: the Jackson Mayor’s race field of candidates.

The debate on the voter id bill went on from 10 am til 3 pm yesterday with no breaks for lunch. I hear it was MIGHTY combative. The original bill included same day registration which got stripped out; it also exempted folks 65 years and older from the voter id which also got stripped out. I hear there was a motion to reconsider passed and it will be debated further today? You can live stream it on some link from MPB, I believe.

News from NMC in Judge Alexander’s courtroom — DeLaughter’s in shackles, which means he hasn’t bonded-out yet. So far he’s the only defendant in sight.

That’s sad news, lotus. Whatever happened (or didn’t), it’s discouraging to see someone with Judge DeLaughter’s record of public service — as defense lawyer in capital cases, as a prosecutor, and as a circuit judge — in a courtroom shackled.

It does raise an interesting question, though. Why do they put the shackles on everyone? Do they really think Bobby DeLaughter is going to hotfoot it out of the Federal Courthouse?

Re: voter ID, the bill that passed the House DOES require a photo ID from everyone, no exemptions. I posted about that in my blog this morning.
