The Gourds at Proud Larrys (and the Hi-Tone in Memphis)

January 17th, 2009 @ 6:33 pm - by NMC · 4 Comments

The Gourds, a band from Texas, will be at Proud Larry’s Monday night, and at the Hi-Tone in Memphis tomorrow night.  The Commercial Appeal writes about them:

The Austin, Texas-based country-rock quintet the Gourds are a legendary live act, and befitting a legend they are more often talked about than actually experienced.

Together more than 15 years, the band — frontman Kevin Russell, bassist Jimmy Smith, keyboardist Claude Bernard, drummer Keith Langford, and multi-instrumentalist Max Johnston — has recorded nine albums of alternative honky-tonk. But it’s been on club stages across the country that they have made their living and their reputation.

It’s been four or five years since I’ve seen them (the last time was also at Proud Larry’s); they put on a really good show.

As an Austin boy I listened to The Gourds quite a bit in my day. When NMC says they put on a good show, thats an understatement. If your going to be here on Monday join me and others to see the band. Start listening now!

Here is a favorite song. Sorry the quality is a little raw.

This Gourds song is a classic one that helped them become famous. All I’ll say is it’s a cover you wouldn’t expect from a group called The Gourds from Austin.

The past 12 months have been really good for alt country fans in Oxford. Steve Earle, Carll Hayes and countless others.
