1 + 1 = Hmmm

July 19th, 2008 @ 1:35 pm - by lotus · 19 Comments

An aside in the Daily Mississippian story that I posted about Thursday keeps ticking in my mind: “The chancellor is currently on vacation in the Bahamas, where he will be until August, his secretary said.”

That keeps reminding me of something else I posted a long time ago — in fact, way back on December 1, 2007:

… [At Dickie Scruggs's arraignment,] U.S. Attorney Tom Dawson asked [U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Allan] Alexander to set a $5 million bond on the Scruggses, saying they were a flight risk with the family having a home in the Bahamas and owning a private jet. …

Them what writes-supportive-letters-to-sentencing-judges gits to summer at a pile in the Bahamas? I dunno, but thus the headline . . .

You are correct, lotus. 1+1= the chancellor is a guest at the Scruggs home in the Bahamas—not the first time by any means.

  2. lotus says:

Well, ain’t that cute, Nomiss? I wonder whether any Scruggses are keeping him company; last I heard, at least Dickie and Zach were still in Oxford (sans passports, as I recall).

  3. Shelby says:

Yeah I picked up on that too. Scruggs would do almost anything for the Chancellor and those like him, but he just can’t bring himself to give up information to save his own son. What a guy.

Smacks of the Godfather Part II.

    Film at 11.

Assuming, of course, that NoMiss is correct that ‘the chancellor is a guest at the Scruggs home in the Bahamas–not the first time by any means’,
I must say that I find that offensive, much less down-right impolitic.

The sentencing letter was one thing, but sponging off of a convicted felon is quite another.

Khayat apparently has one absolutely huge ‘blind spot’ that will come back and bite him real goooooood ‘n harrrrrd. Just watch.

  5. Phantom says:

I wonder if Chancellor Khyuck took ‘Scruggs Air’ to the Islands or if it’s still grounded? Anybody spied it at Oxford International lately?

  6. Ben Cole says:

Scruggs’s plane is in Dallas … flew in there from St . Louis 3 days ago.

  7. Nature Lover says:

OK Ben Ill bite how do you know this??

  8. ThirdSouth says:

If Dickie’s plane is located around, say, August 3rd, on the secluded tarmac of a new Swiss residence dubbed the “See Ya’ Neal Chalet” it will not be without precedent. Read up on Bart Chamberlain, son of a former US Attorney from Mobile, Alabama, who did just that, and all he was ducking was a massive civil judgment in favor of the United States.

  9. Observer says:

It was my understanding that Scruggs Air was taken to Houston, Texas, after he entered his plea of guilty and was placed on the market.

It may no longer belong to him.

  10. ThirdSouth says:

Thanks, Observer, what do you understand to be the asking price?

  11. ThirdSouth says:

If a new one costs $60,000,000.00, how much does a used one go for?

  12. RonnPierce says:

    Dear Nomiss,
Would you please contact me privately? As a cocerned generous undergrad and law alum I am try trying to investitgate this for a hopeful columum in the CL. ronnpierce@gmail.com

  13. Ben Cole says:

Nature Lover: Would you believe me if I told you I flew it. And how ’bout if I told you the flight plan and en route tracking data is on the Internet?

  14. OleMizGrad says:

A trip to the Bahamas is hardly comparable to the all expenses paid trip to New Zealand for AG Mike Moore that Dickie hosted some time ago.

A letter pleading for clemency to the court is hardly comparable to the volunteer legal representation that Moore provided to the other Scruggs.

Moore, more than any other person ought to be receiving Federal prosecutorial scrutiny for offering safe moor to these miscreatants. Moue moo moo mumu

  15. Nature Lover says:

    Ben
Mebbe, mebbe not. I was unaware that private planes’ flight plans were on the net. Single enjun props too? And altho you are a flyboy, that close a Dickie connection might be a bit much fir me. Do you know any Vietnam era fly boys now moved to Corinth raisin Tn Walkers?

  16. ThirdSouth says:

Does it have a 14K gold sink, Ben, or did you spend all your time up in the cockpit, devoting attention to more important things?

  17. DeltaNative says:

If you search tail “N1UM”, you’ll notice someone doesn’t want the public to know where their plane goes.

  18. lotus says:

    Dang excruciating us, DN.

  19. ThirdSouth says:

Thanks for the “excruciating” link, Lotus. What’s become of “The Butter Knife”? When Dickie was raising his “Britney defense” (I’m sooooooooo famous that I can’t get a break from anyone), the Butter Knife’s reference to his or her dear old Dad in Shaw, Mississippi put it all in a proper context
