Anita’s story confirms the rumors we’d heard:
“Biggers ordered Scruggs sent to a prison where he will receive mental health and drug treatment. Scruggs was determined to have a drug dependency after he pleaded guilty in the case in March, according to an Oxford attorney close to the case.”
Her last graf:
“Former Attorney General Mike Moore, one of Zach Scruggses attorneys, accompanied the family to court. Ole Miss Chancellor Robert Khayat, a friend since childhood, was there to support Scruggs. Scruggs’ brother-in-law, former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, was not in the courtroom.”
Did Keker request the drug treatment? If so, that could be some shrewd lawyerin’ on his part due to the fact that 1)some federal drug treatment programs (upon completion) can take off up to 12 months of a federal sentence. And 2)since this is the first we’ve heard of the necessity for drug treatment (it is the first mention, isn’t it?)
And another one…could the “treatment” aspect get Scruggs upgraded (or downgraded) to a different facility where the security ain’t so “minimum”?
Phantom, there’ve been rumors of Dickie’s being in rehab somewhere for awhile now (I was thinking somebody had commented about ‘em, but I can’t find that now; can’t recall whether I got that only in emails or may have seen it in comments that got deleted instead of published — quite possibly the latter).
The mention of him being in a rehab center was in an email.
Or two or three, NAAS. Thanks again.
Dickie has had long term back problems, so it’s not surprising that he could have become dependent on pain killers, particularly when you add the stress of these proceedings.
So I was just hearing off-blog, soms. Didn’t know about the back problems before. Those’ll do it, all right, if something’s going to.
In terms of reporting, I think Anita should have identified the source of the drug dependency rumor.
I think the problem was Darvocette (sp?), which had been prescribed for back problems and migraines. The “cure” became worse than the problem, as so often happens. He was not taking drugs recreationally, and you would never know that he took it at all if he didn’t tell you.
