Grady Tollison subpoenaed for Scruggs sentencing

The attorney opposing Dickie Scruggs in the lawsuit that led to his downfall has been subpoenaed to testify for prosecutors Friday morning at Scruggs’ sentencing hearing.

“I’ve been subpoenaed, that’s a fact,” said Grady Tollison, who was working in shirtsleeves and suspenders this morning in his second-floor perch on Oxford Square, where Scruggs also had an office.

“Guess what I am going to do? When it says be at the courthouse at 9 o’clock, I going to be there.”

Tollison said he expects to be asked about the amount of money at stake in the lawsuit his client, Jackson attorney John G. Jones, filed against Scruggs in 2007. Tollison said the media has incorrectly reported that Jones sought his share of $26.5 million in legal fees for a settlement reached with State Farm insurance companies by Scruggs and a team of lawyers known as the Scruggs Katrina Group, who represented policyholders.

Jones was part of SKG. Tollison said the amount in dispute actually is $50 million, because SKG also reached settlements for policyholders with Allstate and Nationwide. Jones was “frozen out” of SKG, Tollison said, after the first settlement with State Farm. …
