Reportage to check out:
In the DJournal, Scruggs disagrees about prison time (unsigned), Patsy Brumfield’s Volumes of letters speak out for Scruggs, Backstrom and, by far most interesting, her Letter writers have strong opinions for Backstrom, Scruggs.
In the Sun Herald, Anita Lee’s extensive 446 letters written for Scruggs, his son, Backstrom quotes passages from many letters and is actually part of a multi-story package that includes Scruggs urges leniency in motion to judge, with links to pdfs of Dickie’s motion for leniency and the US Attorney’s response to it, and No bombshells, some surprises in letters written on Scruggs’ behalf. If Mississippi’s largest newspaper, the Clarion-Ledger, has a fresh Scruggs story, its website hides it.
Via email: “I wish someone would ask if the postage was paid for by Ole Miss. I had to FIRE someone for using a postage-free envelope without permisson several years ago. Go figure.”
My favorite is the life insurance salesman’s plug for his product: “Men who do not love their families do not buy life insurance.”
Mine too, 3dS.
Reckon he thinks Judge Biggers might give him a call after the hearing and say, “You know, I love my family, perhaps more than my current coverage reflects, and I was just wondering if you have any more policies for sale?”
Hee. “Worth a try,” I spoze he thought . . .
I hope that “Ole Miss” letter was mailed, lotus, and not hand-delivered by Khayat. Sorry I am so negative, but the letter would have meant far more had Khayat just made it more personal and not even included any indicia of the University. It would have gone down much smoother with many angry alumni friends of mine and would not have had the faint smell of a quid pro quo attached. Seriously, has Scruggs ever signed one of those pledge cards? I heard they will not even ask him to sign one as Scruggs is “above that” requirement.
Just like he was once, as an Ole Miss Law grad, “above” having to pass the Bar exam, OWIL. (I reckon that now-dead tradition may have surprised me as much as anything I’ve learned about MS these seven months, btw.)
lotus, “above having to pass the Bar exam.” That is a new one on me, I have never ever heard of that.
Yepper, mag. Up until — what, NMC, the mid-80s? — Ole Miss Law grads didn’t have to take the MS Bar exam. May explain a lot, I’m thinking.
It’s coming Lotus and NMC. I believe it was planned for Friday’s print paper. I have been informed it’ll be online this afternoon … but possibly later. I hope y’all understand.
Hey NMC, looky here — ya made the teevy too! Thanks for that, tw.
Indeed, it could explain a WHOLE lot of crap that started and went on because what would the punishment have been, another semester of law school. That to might explain to me an Ole Miss Law grad in our town that after years just could not make a go of it, he left his family behind, goes to Florida and studies for a year or two and Lo and behold never passed the Florida Bar.
Let us know when it’s up, dmw.
Criminey, mag, even I passed the Fla Bar, so it can’t be that hard.
