The first one is for the band that begins 38 or so seconds in and unfortunately only there for 20 seconds or so. Since I’ve not been naming names on the picking posts, I won’t here, although both are easily identifiable.
I’ve now done Doc Watson, John Fahey, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Django Rhinehardt, and Merle Travis in this picking series.
For fans, I think Django must be the one on the audiences right– he and his brother both played guitar in the band. The camera never really focuses on Django (you get a good view of Stephane Grappelli and the middle guitarist) but listen carefully to the really sophisticated chord comping and watch the hands at the very end of the clip.
Is this is? Is this the only film of Django in performance?
What do you think of Doyle Dykes? I heard him play at Chet Atkin’s funeral… unbelievable!!
The goat
Here’s another clip of Django:

That’s a brilliant clip, Plexis. Thanks. You can really watch him playing in it– and see that he really only was able to use part of his hand for chording due to the injury he’d had.
Yep, even before they showed his face, you could see his hands and tell who was playing. Of course,
just listening, you could tell, too.
I seem to recall another good clip of Django playing, but I can’t seem to find it now. I’ll keep digging.
Doggone it, I can’t get that one to play, and y’all have me drooling for it. What happened to his hand, NMC?
I found the other video I was thinking about, it turns out to be the same one as I posted before, but with a piece in the beginning showing the band lounging around and a voice-over. Pretty cool:

Lotus, Django’s hand was burned in some sort of fire in his gypsy caravan, as was much of his body. Apparently, he turned over a candle that caught a bunch of flammable material on fire. After that, he could only use a few fingers on his fret hand, which makes his guitar playing all that more amazing.
Ah, thanks, Plexix. Sure wish I could get these to play without Google’s asking me to sign up for some other services of theirs.
