  1. Jane Terrell says:

There are 2 forces that govern our existence good and evil, ying/yang now look around at all the evil. Probably the shift of balance causing all the problems in this country. Oh, goodness JT it’s you. I just woke from a horrible nightmare something terrible happened to us and there is no way to let anyone know about it. I was briefly allowed a few statements which might have helped my condition, yet, I became bannished and silenced for an eternity as I sought to possibly approach the Oz, to post documents, oh, excuse me, wrong subject matter. Still in the Matrix

  2. MsNExile says:

I am very confused. I have no idea what the first comment means, and I don’t know what to think of the title. Was it put there by the same lotus who wants a level playing field?

  3. Cujo359 says:

This could just as readily be explained by the existence karma. Or as a reaction to heavy concentrations of irony.

  4. lotus says:

MsNExile, I can only tell you that we changed spam-filters last night, so “Jane Terrell” (who is actually “Robert Marie”) apparently showed up in moderation and NMC let him back in.

That’s fine with me, but as you see, this person communicates in another plane than we do. If he proves a serious disrupter, or folks here (including me) can’t resist the temptation to bounce him around too hard, he’ll be leaving again, and for good.

Yes, though I don’t understand your “level playing field” question, I wrote this post headline.

  5. NMC says:

no i did not let him back in. I was surprised to see the post!

  6. NMC says:

(there’s another one with a recipe in the cooking page, which I was equally surprised by)

  7. lotus says:

I’ll be, NMC. Guess we can chalk up two more “false negatives” for our new filter — but maybe the recipe is a peace-offering? Okay, let’s see how it goes.

  8. Jane Terrell says:

It’s not Robert it’s me JT but he’s around and yeah he did insert the Wizard of Oz part. but that’s my recipe.

  9. lotus says:

Okay, Jane T, thanks for the jambalaya, but on this blog, it’s one-commenter-per-ID — that is: NO SOCKPUPPETRY ALLOWED. If Robert keeps commenting as you, you’ll both get the quick boot.

  10. shaveswithaoccamsrazor says:

    Okay, inquiring minds gotta know…

1.Which one of you is currently plugged into the Matrix?
    2. When “Jane” talks does “Robert’s” lips move?
    3. Is there two persons there or should we wait and ask to speak to Robert? Or a third?
    4. Has anyone ever asked about speaking of one’s self in the third person before?
    5. Are you in a safe place?

  11. msbroker says:

Louts, I don’t get the title?

  12. DeltaNative says:

JaneRobertTerrellMarie // If you could throw a green pie in one person’s face, who would it be?

  13. MsNExile says:

I am generally not a fan of Tom Friedman (although I did think The Lexus & the Olive Tree was brilliant–his columns I usually dislike).

But I am far less a fan of attempting to shut down a speaker. The “rules” of free speech seem to go along with the rule of law and the requirement that all comply with the rules of legal procedure (e.g., don’t bribe a judge).

So, odd title. That the pie-ee was Tom Friedman is irrelevant.

  14. DeltaNative says:

The protesters attempted to silence speech; speech that was invited to campus and perfectly legitimate. That’s why I and others seem to be taken aback by the post’s title.

  15. zen master says:

As much as I hate Tom Friedman, I’m really not in favor of pieing people I don’t like. For one thing, it makes them look sympathetic. For another, it’s a battery, and could result in a serious injury. Once you start using violence to make a point, a lot of ugly things can happen.

Also, Friedman’s views on global warming are actually maybe the only thing he has been right about in the last seven or eight years.

  16. zen master says:

This Matt Taibbi article on Friedman is probably the ultimate Friedman putdown.

  17. lotus says:

Y’all got me, and I not only bow but subscribe to the points made at 14-16. My antipathy to Friedman’s war-mongering overwhelmed my good sense at what was, for me, the end of a long day, and I regret that.

  18. NMC says:

Does that mean you deserve a pie of your own?

(I only throw metaphorical pies. Real pies I share with friends)

  19. lotus says:

I bleeve I do. Lemme see, lemon meringue, please.

  20. MsNExile says:

zen 17 Great article. Had I just read the last line, I might even have subscribed to the title of this article!

  21. Sailor says:

Eldest child is a freshman in college at Tulane. Just 4 weeks in to her college career she called to say Ann Coulter was speaking on campus and many students were opposed to the invitation (issued not by the university, but the college Republicans). Mr. Sailor and I encouraged child to attend. She did and was able to form her own opinion about what Coulter had to say. Freedom of speech must not be assaulted (by pies or other more dangerous weapons). Our university campuses must be ever-vigilant in the promotion of free-thinking and the exchange of ideas. A quiet protest of Friedman’s stance on Iraq or appropriate Q&A would have been more acceptable behavior from the Brown scholars. Lotus: I’ve got a key lime pie in the fridge…

  22. NMC says:

When Friedman was here, he got some tough questions about the war that were well-thought out and pointed. That’s the way to go.

  23. shaveswithaoccamsrazor says:

I don’t like the pie thing either. I like NMC’s idea, which I’ll attempt to paraphrase, “you fight free speech with more free speech.”

More than a few times I’ve learned a tremendous amount of information by listening intently to what the “other side” presents. Both about the topic being discussed…and even sometimes. something about myself.

The only thing that turns me off is when the speaker/writer uses more rhetoric and emotional plea than fact, logic or reason. Then I too want to get a pie, but to use it as comfort food and not as a weapon: I’m not wasting good food on disagreeing with someone. My granny drilled that ole “poor starvin’ children in China and Africa” speech in me too deep I guess.

P.S. ZenMaster #17. Thanks, that was a good article.

  24. Sailor says:

Oh BTW, child thought Coulter “mean and nasty, with little substance in her remarks…” my opinion, to be sure, but child got to form the opinion all by witnessing first hand. She’s also heard Obama, Bill Clinton and Salman Rushdie.

  25. shaveswithaoccamsrazor says:

Pinkie—so by your logic, “is not pie-ing a form of free speech” I should be able to nuke the next person I don’t agree with? Interesting concept. Just bomb people you don’t agree with… or at least shoot them in the kneecap.

Lotus…where is the “NUKEM” button located? I can’t seem to find it next to the “edit” button.

  26. Jane Terrell says:

DeltaNative why does the pie have to be green? But, really I’m not into throwing pies.

  27. lotus says:

Well, here’s a video of the incident, the watching of which increases my chagrin. Nope, there’s nothing in the least funny or satisfying there, even if it is Tom Friedman.

  28. Jane Terrell says:

Lotus, it’s Rebecca Jane Terrell Marie and Robert is my husband 30 years July 28th. We certainly didn’t mean any offense by responding to Mr. Burr. He has his opinions and we have our documents which are accompanied by injuries and losses. Additionally, we feel if attorneys wish to shield the defendants in this matter then they should understand the upcoming complaint against them for various forms of extortion. If we have offended you in any form of fashion we kindly ask that you elaborate. The issues are such that every possibility exist that our awards from 1999 are enterwoven to the current corruption.

  29. DeltaNative says:

RJTM 28 & 30 // Because the pies thrown at Thomas Friedman were green, that’s why.

The real point of my question is this: You have been espousing this deep, grievous conspiracy against your family (I think) using somewhat murky prose, but you clearly have an ax to grind. What I was trying to do in a short question was to get you to say who you feel has wronged you.

As an aside, why don’t you set up your own blog and post your documents and tell your story?

  30. lotus says:

Thank you for this explanation, RJTM. The only “offense” is y’all’s shape-shifting commenting style, which as I explained, isn’t acceptable here. If you both want to comment, that’s fine, but pick one “handle” apiece and stick to it.

You’ve now commented under two names and so has Robert; apparently sometimes the two of you have even doubled-up to comment. This practice, called “sockpuppetry,” is on most blogs (including folo) a bannable offense. Just cut that out and we’ll get along fine.

  31. Jane Terrell says:

DeltaNative to be honest with you I wouldn’t know where to begin. In fact that was one reason for comments made here. Much of our time is spent researching. The volumes referred to by Mr. Burr were not in referrence to acquiring legal representation but rather a trial before Judge Graves. And thanks, I get the pie color. Lotus, we apologize for the sockpuppetry.

  32. lotus says:

pinkie, I don’t know how you can watch that video and see anything but a battery. An act needn’t be lethal to be violence, as clearly this was. Both the pie-throwers and my own amusement at first hearing of it creep me out good.

  33. DeltaNative says:

Pinkie – It appears you are the one who’s shallow. Shaves wasn’t being literal.

P.S. Comedy shows are fiction and not reality.

  34. shaveswithaoccamsrazor says:

Screaming “fire” in a crowded theatre is a form of free speech also..but it isn’t acceptable. Nor should the throwing of pies at invited speakers.

Use of violence in any form to protest someone’s differing opinion is a matter of proportion is it not? A pie today, a gun tomorrow, a nuke the day after.

My granny always said, “It’s all fun and games until someone gets an eye poked out or their feelings hurt.”

And yes, I can be shallow like that if I have to stoop down to someone making what appears IMO asinine statements that need rebuttal…..”it is not like they killed him or maimed him or hurt him or stopped him”

It wasn’t my logic: it was yours I was attempting to follow. I’ll be in the corner over here in “silent” protest about your right to your opinion since I know better than to further inflame the difference of opinion on boorish behavior…since I can’t find it in myself to throw a pie at a monitor screen…

  35. iratetoday says:

97-3-7. Simple assault; aggravated assault; domestic violence.
    (1) A person is guilty of simple assault if he (a) attempts to cause or purposely, knowingly or recklessly causes bodily injury to another; or (b) negligently causes bodily injury to another with a deadly weapon or other means likely to produce death or serious bodily harm; or (c) attempts by physical menace to put another in fear of imminent serious bodily harm…

Actually maybe you should go to law school before tackling case law.

  36. shaveswithaoccamsrazor says:

Yep, it’s a crime. Specifically, battery. At least in California. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D00E2D71230F933A15752C0A96F958260
And Mississippi don’t like it either.

SEC. 97-35-5. Disorderly conduct; interference with business, customers, invitees, etc.

  37. zen master says:

Remember the distinction between assault and battery. Assault is putting a person in fear of an unwanted contact. Battery is making an unwanted contact.

  38. shaveswithaoccamsrazor says:

Okay, I think we adequately “nuked” him on that point, metaphorically speaking of course.

  39. DeltaNative says:

    Using only words.

  40. Cujo359 says:

I agree with zen master and shaveswithoccamsrazor – pie throwing isn’t an acceptable form of protest. Often, it’s not even funny. What’s worse, since it’s a low-class way to express an opinion, the victim isn’t even likely to get why it’s being done to him. From his point of view, he was attacked by someone he doesn’t even know for no reason.

At least, that’s the way I’d view such a thing if it happened to me.

I was just riffing on Lotus’ theme. There’s a human tendency to enjoy others’ misfortune when we think they deserve it. That’s all the guilt I’m going to carry around on this issue.

  41. Jane Terrell says:

How did the subject matter “a suggestion of the existence of God” become the subject matter of throwing pies? I did see the video my opinion that was very rude indeed.

  42. lotus says:

JT, think sorta-kinda “God’ll getcha for that.”

  43. Jane Terrell says:

Ever heard see nothing, hear nothing and know nothing? But God sees, hears and knows all.

  44. SKE says:

On the frontice piece to Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy quotes from the Bible. He says,

“Vengeance is mine, I shall repay, thus sayeth the Lord.”

The statement or similar statement is found in more than one spot in the Bible. E.g. Deuteronomy 32:35; Romans 12:19 .

A useful thought; its probably true. And in more ways than we know or can know. At least that has been my experience.

  45. Sailor says:

lotus, I’m jus’ thinkin’, but bet that’s the last time you drag God into a headline…

  46. lotus says:

    Quite possibly, Sailor.

  47. Robert Marie says:

Might I note a relevance to all this as well as an additional fact that the Bible refers to and I beleive that is a political beast. No more gun slingers the entire process becomes civil a great thing for civilians. However, I feel an implication toward not taking matters in your own hands regarding some forms of political corruption. Simply stated who is like unto the beast, who can make war with him?

  48. Jane Terrell says:

Oops, Lotus I hope I didn’t just violate any possible rules. Question, Robert logged in and it appears it wasn’t accepted. Are we to assume 1 user name per computer?

  49. lotus says:

Refresh the page, JT, he’s here. (Two or more commenters from one computer is fine, just neither two or more using one name nor one using two or more names.)

  50. Jane Terrell says:

I have been asked to relate to the comments in regards to the title and that all the issues herein are quite proper to this form. As we are driven toward a civil society in where we are to discuss our differences even to the point of vocal argument. We are conditioned to certainly not take matters into our own hands through violate means. This being a plus to civil society it also lends protection to those who run our society. This in turn brings to mind an additional verse the Bible describes a political beast along with a question “Who is like unto the beast, who can make war with the beast?”

  51. Jane Terrell says:

    Thanks Lotus

  52. DeltaNative says:

Robert Marie 56 & 58 // See my question at comment 31 on this thread. Tell me who you think the beast is.

  53. Jane Terrell says:

DeltaNative it was I, Jane, are you saying that I’m a beast? Like to know why? Have I offended you in any manner if so please explain? Robert has his own opinions and I have mine, opposites do attract that’s why we have been together for 30 years.

  54. DeltaNative says:

Jane Terrell // No, I was not, and please do not think I was. I was repeating my question at comment 31, above. Please accept my apology for any confusion. Have a good day.

  55. Jane Terrell says:

DeltaNative you have a good day to. Misunderstanding on my part.

  56. Robert Marie says:

DeltaNative I’ve narrowed my list of defendants to a minimum, although they know who they are I would rather not comment at this time pending the filing of complaint. As to your question at 60 when going into religious discussions that comes to the understanding that an individual has and his personal relationship with the Almighty. Not easily explained the beast is not a person but rather the eventual formulation which refers to one world government, i.e. the beast. Christ was asked at least twice regarding the sign of end times. It would all begin with an individual that would set into motion the creation of that government. The number of letters in his name would be 666. I just wonder if anyone understands that this as well as other major events have occurred and are progressing toward their fulfillment. However, our ultimate undoing will be by our own hands.

  57. pam says:

I think the pie brusied his ego more than anything else. That hurts
