Saturday is Doubledecker Festival in Oxford, a really pleasant street festival on the Square in Oxford. The bands performing include Dirty Dozens Brass Band, Blue Mountain, the Hill Country Review (members of North Mississippi Allstars plus Dewayne and Gary Burnside), Color Revolt, the Avett Brothers, and others. Here’s the lineup.
Any Folo regular coming it for it, shoot me an email.
At the same time as the festival, this is a big party weekend in Oxford, and all the bars book interesting live music. Folks have asked me who’s playing. Here’s a listing (courtesy of the Local Voice entertainment tabloid). I’ve put in boldface and added comments to ones I think are particularly interesting. This is not a comment on the other bands, many of whom I’ve heard and like.
Mayhem String Band at Proud Larrys
Kent Burnside "King of Cotton Field Disco " at 2 Stick
Telefunken at Jubillee
Maria y el Sol at Parish Baker Pub
"Hill Country Revue " at Proud Larrys –Crish Chew, Cody Dickinson, and Luther Dickinson (of North Mississippi Allstars), Dwayne Burnside and Gary Burnside (R.L.’s sons, the former a formidable guitarist and bandleader, the later longtime bass player with Jr. Kimbrough and an excellent guitarist himself)
Zoogma " Trance and Jam from Oxford " at 2 Stick
Wiley and the Checkmates at the Library Herbert Wiley was a local shoe repairman who had an r&b/soul band in the 60s. They played a lot of live gigs, put out a single, and then went on to grown-up careers. Herbert (about to retire from the shoe shop) put a soul band together a few years back and they’ve developed a big local following.
The Big RB featuring George McConnell at the Rib Cage
Blue Mountain at Proud Larrys recently reunited alt-country band, with reason this areas favorite rock band for years.
"Rebel Stage " local showcase at Jubillee –Cooters, Megacooter, Kill the Eago, Sleepwalkers, Night Lights
Kenny Brown and the Weeks at 2 Stick. Kenny Brown was R.L. Burnside’s guitarist for years, and has assimilated North Mississippi hill country blues to his bones. He’s the host musician at the annual Hill County blues picnic and is always worth seeing.
"Doubledecker Hootenanny " The Spears Brothers, Balance Jazz Trio and Aaron Hall Band at Parish Baker Pub
So Kenny IS at Two Stick Sat night…. (I don’t think they know that…but I’ll be there)
NMC, thanks for the post. Will you be going to see Kenny?
Probably. It’s going to be a long day, though!
there seems to be some confusion about Kenny, but it’s confirmed in that they have it posted on a poster in their window listing both the Weeks and Kenny.
I just called them and they confirmed.
