Bad-sounding news for Mr. Mayor

April 22nd, 2008 @ 3:39 pm - by lotus · 19 Comments

A man behind bars facing charges for another murder claims he knows what happened the night Jackson Police Officer Robert Washington was killed. He says Jackson Mayor Frank Melton knows about it, too. …

Thanks to OMTL these links to what surely reads like bad news for Frank Melton:

Sure. Mr. Mayor can’t be enjoying where this is going. A deposition by a witness in a homocide…did they need to depose the eyewitness b/c he may not be around come trial date? JPD has been trying to keep this w/in the JPD ONLY and if the Hinds Co Sheriff’s dept has some evidence that the JPD doesn’t have…like a boody tshirt and a murder weapon, it’s gonna get messy for Frank. (It’s gonna get messy for Frank regardless)

  2. ccvz says:

And another interesting thing…why did Robert Smith and an “assistant” go to Ridgeland on a tip to dig a hole in hopes of finding a weapon? I’m no atty, but wouldn’t that make Smith a witness, therefore unable to prosecute? (Am I wrong about that?)

Well there’s been rumors surrounding old Frank for years….

  4. ccvz says:

    Frankie’s a gonner.

  5. somslawyer says:

“Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin … says it’s the DA’s responsibility to reach out to his office, not the other way around.” WTF?

  6. Gardenia says:

Looks like a turf battle royale brewing.

  7. BCHAN says:

Looks like some really hard to understand reporting/writing. Geezz. Still can not figure out just what it is that Frank Melton is supposed to have done wrong.

  8. JustOlMoi says:

Frank’s been a’layin’ low lately – guess he’s a’tryin’ to pay off that mortgage and all them other debts.
But really … it’s time he got back in the news since he can’t seem to keep his feet out of ‘the stuff.’

  9. ccvz says:

BCHAN…I get confused reading it as well. I had to call an atty friend somewhat close to the case to ’splain it to me. But I think Frankie knows a little too much about this murder. And he’s not the only “official” that may know too much. But the writing is a bit difficult to follow…especially re the quoted exchange b/t Melton and Moore.

  10. Gardenia says:

BCHAN, I think the implication is that Melton’s “Show me you don’t have anything to do with him any more” could be taken as a suggestion to carry out a hit. I admit that is a stretch, but I think that is what the informant meant to convey.

    Gardenia has my vote.

This police officer’s murder went unsolved for years before an arrest was made. I remember seeing his widow and young son on tv begging people to come forward if they had information. I truly hope it is not the case that public officials knew details of this murder and did not report it to authorities.

  13. ccvz says:

Frank has some serious street power/influence. I hear people are turning down requests to testify against him left and right (unrelated to this) due to the fear factor.

  14. Jane Terrell says:

Mayor Melton sure does have alot of problems here lately.

You certainly have to wonder about a man who lives in Jackson, MS while his wife lives in Tyler, Texas….hmmmm

  16. Hot Rob says:

I heard the rumor that the Sheriff doesn’t trust the DA, due to Robert smith, Melton and Ed Peters having sealed indictments for jury tampering at the last Melton trial? Anyone else here this? I know that the ex chief has been in front of a grand jury? is Dunn Lampton scared to do anything? or is this going to go the way of Phen fen ?

HOTROD//Phen Fen (A secret) in the Mississippi Court System..There is very little one can find on the Mississippi Settlement, and I’ve been told (two settlements) was made. Millions and Millions ..A possibility is it’s underseal . What do you mean, going to go the way of Phen Fen?

  18. ccvz says:

    Hot Rod,
Bingo. I believe Lampton will get it done.
There could be another name or two in with your list, but I’m too uncertain to say.

  19. Hot Rod says:

    Magnolia,
Judge Bramlette said in open court that Robert Arledge was one of many in the illegal conspiracy. The special prosecutors said that Robert Arledge was not the head person in the conspiracy. Roe Frazier left the practice of law, because of it. That left Dennis Sweet, Shane Langston, Michael Gallagher, and Richard Schwartz. Arledge, the paralegal, and 18 of Schwartz’s clients pled. Dun Lampton just doesnt want to go after them.
