I know a lot of lawyers who do pro bono work, but not for wealthy clients like Scruggs or State Farm in litigation or tobacco companies in litigation. My guess is that Scruggs felt so sorry for Mike doing all this work for free that Dickie paid Mike "a stipend, so to speak" from the tobacco settlement fees.
