Morning-papers patrol

Well, lessee, what have the journos for us today . . . hmm, precious little so far.

Jerry Mitchell does up the MS Bar response to the Martz/Mikhail motion for retention of Dickie Scruggs’s Bar license, managing to miss what NMC caught by not mentioning Shelton, of course. But at least he squeezes out more detail than Anita Lee’s six grafs and the DJournal’s three sentences.

Since there’s not much to read yet, maybe you’d like to step over to the C-L’s editorial page and catch an inspiration for writing?

… Hinds Countians should hope that the charges are found baseless and [suspended Judge Bobby] DeLaughter is quickly returned to the bench.

The Hinds County judicial system is bogged down with the jail full of pre-trial detainees and another estimated 2,000 people out on bond awaiting trial. The county gets about 1,500 new indictments each year. And, when DeLaughter, one of the more efficient judges at clearing cases, stepped aside, he had 480 criminal and 569 civil cases pending on his docket.

We should be thankful Gov. Haley Barbour and Supreme Court Chief Justice Jim Smith have worked with the Legislature to appoint judges to help reduce the caseload: Special Circuit Judge L. Breland Hilburn and Special Circuit Judge William Coleman are picking up the slack, along with two other part-time judges, Billy Bridges and Trent Walker.

Clearing the backlog is too important to criminal justice in Jackson to be impeded.

Got any thoughts about that to share there or here? Okay, well, pass the biscuits, please . . .

Morning, jsh. Speak to me of “criminal justice in Hinds County” . . .

  3. Sailor says:

Just think the C-L editorial board might need a big dose of “wake-me-up!” I thought it interesting that NONE of their endorsed candidates won the run-offs yesterday…

Good Lord, save us from ‘The Clarion Ledger’ !!

When the Clarion Ledger editors have the gall to write “Hinds Countians should hope that the charges are found baseless and [suspended Judge Bobby] DeLaughter is quickly returned to the bench”, they overlook one salient and vital point:
It’s not a matter of speed that justice warrants in any such matter as a judge being charged with corruption, but justice seeks the CORRECT result — not a speedy one.

If the man turns out to be guilty, we don’t need a criminal sitting on that side of the bench. It’s bad enough having so many standing in front of the bench – much less seated on the bench.

What a travesty of a newspaper the Clarion Ledger is. Maybe such comments would be expected in some biased weekly ‘rag’ but not in a Gannett-connected daily in the State’s Capitol City ! Or then again … maybe that’s what is to be expected from Gannett and its ilk.

    Help !!!

Thank God Charlie Ross did not win.

  6. iratetoday says:

Maybe it’s his chronic scowl that he wears.

Maybe it’s the fact the Chamber of Commerce loves him as well as the tort reformers…

  7. Dragoman says:

I agree. Charlie Ross just seems so disagreeable all the time – never smiles, always dour, just doesn’t seem likable.

  8. Delta Boy says:

I don’t know Buck Clarke helped him when he ran for LtG.

  9. Sailor says:

irate, US Chamber and tort-reformers will love Harper just as much–give it all little time. Interesting, Harper got Trent’s nod.

  10. OleMissTrialLawyer says:

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii don’t know about that, Sailor. Harper has represented quite a few plaintiffs in tort cases in his day. And not a single insurance company, to my knowledge.

  11. Sailor says:

So, you think the US Chamber’ll stay out of that race? Cuz you know po’ ole Gill ain’t gettin’ a dime. Jess Dickinson had also handled a few plaintiff’s cases in his day, if I recall and we know the Chamber supported him. I said, give it some time…they certainly aren’t supporting a democrat for US congress, was my point. Was wrong to include “tort-reformers” in this particular instance…and stand corrected.

  12. Gardenia says:

Hey, Irate, the scowl works for Benny Thompson. Cholly just hasn’t mastered the technique yet. Or maybe it plays better to a different audience. Ya think?

  13. Dragoman says:

Gad, you’re right, Gardenia. Scowlin’ Bennie is my congressman. My little sliver of a street in the Belhaven neighborhood got gerrymandered into the Second District last go-around, so I’m in there with all the Delta folks.
