Jimmie Gates now … Jimmie Gates then

March 29th, 2008 @ 11:48 am - by lotus · 4 Comments

Usually when I jeer the rag I’ve redubbed “the Ledger,” it’s Jerry Mitchell’s stuff making me hoot. Today it’s Jimmie Gates’s.

In his amplification of the bulletin on Keith Shelton’s reinstatement to the Mississippi Bar that ran yesterday, Gates writes, “[Judge Houston J.] Patton couldn’t be reached for comment Friday.” That’s a right funny statement if you recall what fulsome access Jimmie had to Patton back in 2005.

See pages 5-8 for some fancy swallowing indeed.

The comments on the CL website are running around 3:1 that this is a cover-up of Shelton’s wrongdoing. Heinrich Himmler made the observation about propaganda that if you tell a lie often enough, regardless how outrageous the lie is, it will eventually be accepted as the truth.

Well, soms, as spot-on as Himmler’s observation is, I’m a little surprised it’s only 3:1. Shoot, that almost qualifies as “goodish news.”

Like N.D. Miss. venirepersons, most C-L readers won’t have read the blogging and probably reflexively distrust anyone called “lawyer” (the prevailing culture having done its work on them) .

Reckon they’ll have many more local legal types to diss before ’08 is over, though . . .

I have just read the responses to Gates’ article, and was pleasantly surprised. The responses I read were much in favor of Shelton, for the most part, and they came from people who were much more literate than the usual CL online letter responder.

That’s good to hear, Dixie. Think I’ll ramble back over there and enjoy a few of those myself.
