He Got Better Things For You (a music post)

March 24th, 2008 @ 1:13 pm - by NMC · 6 Comments

I’m thinking about starting a semi-daily link to some interesting music from this part of the world that might be new to folks.

I’ll start with one that is a reasonable bet to be new to most of you, a Gospel song a day late for Easter (full of “the Holy Ghost and the fire,” too). This is the Memphis Sanctified Singers, performing “He Got Better Things for You”, recorded by a Victor Records field unit (national record companies sent traveling recording units through the south on a semi-regular basis before WWII) in Memphis in 1929. Will Shade of the Memphis Jug Band is playing guitar.

Someone once said, “Music is the soundtrack of life.” Here’s to tomorrow’s music post (raising imaginary pint glass)…..and if nominations are taken, here’s one for Jeff Buckley. He only lived in “this part of the world” for the last year or so of his life, but oh how promising it was!

    I’ll second the Buckley nod.

Tomorrow is the Memphis Jug Band’s “Kansas City Moan”. Maybe I’ll do Buckley after that!
