Keith Shelton stiffed again

February 28th, 2008 @ 2:37 pm - by lotus · 19 Comments

See for yourselves.

Twelve Thursdays ago the Mississippi Bar recommended J. Keith Shelton’s immediate reinstatement. But your Supreme Court just can’t seem to get its mind around that.

Am I the only Mississippi lawyer who follows this story who is not surprised that it takes the Miss. Sup. Court > a dozen weeks to get around to writing an opinion in what amounts to an agreed resolution?

I am not taking away from the injustice of this. Just an observation about how speedily things happen down there.

  2. NMC says:

I will make a note of telling one of many great stories about Justice Armis Hawkins. When he was a practicing lawyer, he wrote the clerk of the court that he was going to be awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for discovery something faster than the speed of light. Because he had received an order denying a petition for a rehearing he’d filed faster than the petition could have been delivered to Jackson by mail, he knew he’d made this discovery.

  3. hazel75 says:

Justice Hawkins was the best. I used to love reading his opinions.

But, yeah, I’m not surprised although I am disappointed. Shelton’s been screwed long enough.

  4. lotus says:

Well, NMC, you may be right — maybe it’s just good ol’ inefficiency (your great Armis Hawkins story notwitstanding). But both this case and that Court have displayed so much hinkiness for so long — and so recently as well (as in the newfound definition of “year”) — that innocent incompetence isn’t necessarily the handiest explanation.

  5. lotus says:

Well, while we’re at it, thanks to reader CG for another interesting tale of a Hinds County Court judge . . . I say, quite a benchful that lot must be.

  6. Anderson says:

So, holding a machete to someone’s throat isn’t a crime???

I’m not saying I believe it happened, and I think Singletary’s a fine chancellor, but if that’s the claim, I don’t see how it doesn’t get to a jury.

  7. NMC says:

Fans of Justice Hawkins should know that a novel he wrote after retirement is recently in print, edited by Joanne Morris (Willie’s widow) and with an introduction by Judge Mike Mills (chief judge in ND Miss).

  8. iratetoday says:

I’m not surprised just sickened. There’s so many questions and, as of yet, no answers.

  9. kingfish says:

but damn if they didn’t discipline a justice court judge no longer in office.

  10. lotus says:

Well, since that’s how quick on the uptake they are, maybe NMC does have a point, huh, kingfish?

  11. iratetoday says:

Another question to pose. I don’t see anything in any of the Shelton pdfs that indicates the Tribunal spoke to Patton on this matter. Nada as to his side of the story which would be interesting. Really makes one wonder WTF is going on with our nice lil’ legal system.

  12. Dragoman says:

I can’t speak to Judge Singletary’s behavior on the bench, but he sure seems like a hothead in his private life. Right around the time of the machete incident, I believe he was arrested for verbally threatening his next door neighbors over a barking dog.

And another great example of the MSSC priorities…..

  14. Dragoman says:

Ah, yes. The fiery Nicki Boland. Got herself reprimanded again right around election time last year over some boneheaded conduct in a domestic dispute before her. That and the eariler thing cost her the race.

  15. shaveswithaoccamsrazor says:

Maybe if Shelton had an a favorite eating place for the local judiciary to relax in his case would be addressed a little quicker. Judge Boland’s husband feeds alot of them famous Inez burgers to a couple of the Supremes…but I guess someone got indigestion from eating one since it didn’t go her way. I like them alot myself, all that good chili added to all them jalepenos and onions….

  16. Dragoman says:

Ah, yes – CS’s. Home of the famous Inez Burger. I whiled away many a pleasant hour there in my salad days.

Jane-Maybe they “forget” on purpose? Old files, old cases, old buddies, old deals gone bad, old graveyards full of memories we hope others forget…

  18. iratetoday says:

Jane maybe you should have written it in tounges.
