Post-tornadoes check-in thread

February 6th, 2008 @ 4:49 am - by lotus · 31 Comments

Okay, lotus here, worrying about all my tornado-run-over buddies in Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Would y’all please each just say “Okay here” or whatever? I hear second-hand (thanks, nowdy!) that NMC came through fine but will fret until I hear from/about each of y’all.

You okay there in the Delta, Oxpatch, the red-clay hills, Jackson, elsewhere? Got a wild story to tell?

May all our loved ones and their loved ones be safe!

Was pretty bad in Oxford. We had no one die but lost some homes and a few businesses. Just checking now. Me and mines were OK but we had to do the hallway duck for a few.
Scruggs will have to wait today. I got windier fish to fry this morning.

Be careful hopping around on that debris, Alyssa! (Love, Mom.)

My two uncles and aunt lost their house in Abbeville ()just north of Oxford) last night and had to go to the hospital with minor cuts and bruises and cracked ribs.

No twisters in the Bold New City.

Twas a stormy night on the range, but all is fine. I’m so happy that I had previously decided to postphone yesterday’s appointment in Memphis.

Former Supreme Court Justice Chuck McRae was a guest on the Paul Gallo show this morning. It may be just me, but his demeanor seemed much more subdued than I can ever remember. It’s just that he’s not really the subdued kind of personality, but he seemed so today on radio.

When Gallo asked if McRae was surprised at the indictments of any of these people, McRae answered that he was not surprised about Scruggs.

I’m sorry that I missed most of the show. I think I recall that McRae had major Gulf coast financial and political backing from the G. coast powers in his elections.

  21. iratetoday says:

Hmm…very interesting That McRae would say that considering he was so pro plaintiff.

  22. nomiss says:

Yes, I found that comment interesting also.

  23. Gardenia says:

It was a slogan coined by the Johnson administration (preceded Melton as Mayor) to puff the city of Jackson. It is used locally with heavy irony. The more common reference is to “Jacktown,” as in local conservative black radio host Kim Wade’s regular advice to his listeners to “stay strapped down (i.e., armed) in Jacktown.”

  24. Dragoman says:

Ahoy, lotus! All is well in Jackson, the Bold New City (a risable marketing handle from the late 1980s, I believe). I much preferred the city when it was Shy and Old.

I’ve been wondering what Chuck McRae is making of all this lately, and what advice he might be offering the Langstons. I know it’s been mentioned here before, but just as quick reiteration for those not in the know, McRae’s daughter Rebecca is married to Shane Langston, Joey’s brother.

  25. Gardenia says:

In case Jane has not adequately informed you, we have a crime problem here. Former Mayor Johnson’s police chief attributed it to a matter of exagerated “perceptions.” So far, no perceptions have been apprehended or indicted.

  26. Gardenia says:

And McRae is from Pascagoula. Can this get any more inbred?

  27. iratetoday says:

    Jackistan is even more fitting.

  28. Stormy says:

    Jane, duck the sledge hammers.

  29. iratetoday says:

Yep Frankofile might send his lil boys after you.

  30. Stormy says:

Wonder if your neighbors suffered or got to move uptown and enjoy the indoor pool? hee-hee.

Just got back from getting my ashes. Puts this other hurly-burly in a different perspective. Not that it isn’t still very interesting, as Seinfeld might say. (For you heathens on this board, today is Ash Wednesday.)
