Trent Lott: I know nawthink

December 5th, 2007 @ 3:25 pm - by · 2 Comments

UPDATED BELOW

Meanwhile back in D.C., yesterday Trent Lott, in the words of Politico’s John Bresnahan, “strongly denie[d]” any link between his sudden retirement and the immediately-following indictment of his wife’s little sister’s husband, Dickie Scruggs.

Lott, saying he hadn’t been aware that Dickie was under investigation by the Justice Department, nonetheless suggested that he may have been the target of an FBI “sting” –though “I don’t know the facts.”

“No, it had nothing at all to do with it,” Lott said of the Scruggs’ indictment and his own decision to step down. “I didn’t know that he was under investigation. I never heard anything about it.”

The senator who knows-nothing-but-hints-at-a-sting also says that’s he’s spoken with Dickie only once since the indictment. Now what would we give to know whether that conversation was purely familial commiseration — or something more along the lines of “if you even think . . .” by one side or both.

Let’s hide ‘n’ watch. Sounds as if that’s Sen. Lott’s plan too.

UPDATE: Actually, this is o/t as to this post (but the last one’s updated all over the place, so what the hey). Just wanted to let you Ole Miss Law grads — oh, okay, as is Trent Lott! — know about a commenter named Open Your Eyes on Lattman’s latest post whom you may decide needs a rendering-unto (or leave off the adverb).

Just sayin’.

  1. Nice to catch the family link, I haven’t been following you real close on this case but I think I’ll dig in and catch up.
I mean really, with a name like Dickie Scruggs there has to be some comedy gold in there somewhere.

Aha, Busted, me boy, are you in for a big bowl a tangy ketchup!

Search “Dickie Scruggs” up at top right and start at last Wednesday. See ya when you surface (laughing yo’ ass off, I wouldn’t doubt).
